Review: The Sound of Music

It wasn’t too long ago when it was announced that Bill Kenwright’s production of one of the greatest family musicals of all time, The Sound of Music, would return to Blackpool Opera House at the Winter Gardens.

The week-long run of performances from the 18^th to 22^nd February also coincides with Half-term, which means that the Opera House was teeming with a variety of age groups all coming together for one thing: the love of music.

Naturally, for those growing up in the early sixties, The Sound of Music has defined their generation and it was heart-warming to see the over fifties triumphantly singing the famous songs, such as The Hills Are Alive and Climb Ev’ry Mountain. For those much younger, the musical offered them an unforgettable insight into why this is classed as an all-time classic that defies the meaning on time.

If you're unfamiliar with The Sound of Music, Maria, who is played by Emilie Fleming in the 2020 revival, takes a job as governess to a large family. Set in Salzburg, Austria in 1938, Maria’s duties are to look after Captain Von Trapp’s seven children whilst deciding whether to become a nun. Along the way, she falls in love with the children and also the Captain, who is played by Andrew Lancel.

By this time, Austria is annexed by Nazi Germany. The German Navy offer the Captain commission, who is held in high regard, and is ordered to accept, but as Captain von Trapp opposes the Nazis, both Captain and Maria decide to flee pre-war Salzburg and leave their beloved town behind.

It must be said that the children were a joy to watch, marching around the stage oozing with confidence and their voices perfectly harmonised. Emilie Fleming, who plays Maria, came into her own and it was clear to see why she has been casted for this leading role. Emilie had an incredible command of her vocal abilities and is certainly one to keep an eye on. The same could also be said for little Gretl, the youngest of the seven children, who also melted our hearts in the process!
