Katie Paterson: First There is A Mountain
28 May 2019
by Visit Blackpool
On Sunday 2 June from 3pm – 5pm on Central Beach, Blackpool, Grundy Art Gallery will host a new participatory project called First There is a Mountain by award winning artist Katie Paterson. In the run to the event, Grundy Art Gallery is also organising a series of exciting thematically linked workshops and activities.
FIRST THERE IS A MOUNTAIN: KATIE PATERSON
Grundy Art Gallery is one of twenty-five high profile coastal art venues around the UK to be involved in Katie Paterson’s new participatory artwork, First There is a Mountain. Members of the public are invited to join a mass sandcastle-building event using buckets that are designed by the artist, and which take the form of five of the Earth’s mountains. Linking the world’s geography to the smallest grains of sand, First There is a Mountain continues the artist's interest in helping us to engage with forces that are too intangible and too immense to experience in other ways. Participation in the event is FREE, however, booking is required. Please contact Grundy Art Gallery for further information and to book a place. First There is a Mountain is supported by National Lottery through Creative Scotland and Arts Council England.
GRUNDY ART GALLERY AT THE GRANGE
In the run up to the First There is a Mountain event, Grundy Art Gallery is working with @the Grange and artist Kelly Jayne Jones, to offer a group of young people the opportunity to explore the themes behind Katie Paterson’s project. Using a range of digital and analogue techniques, from writing to recording and, inspired by their emotional responses to mountains, nature and landscape, participants will develop a spoken word piece that will be recorded and documented. Participants will also take part in the First There is a Mountain event.
