by Visit Blackpool
The Grundy Art Gallery is pleased to announce the launch of its 2019 Spring Programme, which includes the large-scale international group exhibition, ‘ON REPEAT’, and an exciting schedule of public talks, workshops and events.
Grundy Art Gallery’s Curator, Paulette Terry Brien said: “I am really looking forward to introducing our audiences to our Spring Programme and to providing them with lots of opportunities to look at and experience contemporary art in new ways.”
Here’s a taste of what’s on offer . . .
LAUNCH EVENT AND TOUR: Saturday 23 March 14:00 - 17:00
A talk and tour of the exhibition, ON REPEAT with Grundy Art Gallery’s Curator and artists Louise Giovanelli and Vivian Greven (14:00 - 15:00) followed by the Exhibition Launch (15:00 - 17:00).
ON REPEAT
The exhibition brings together a group of nationally and internationally recognised contemporary artists whose works variously explore how digital technology, the internet, and social media are transforming our experience of looking, and our relationship to images, objects and ideas.
ON REPEAT includes the work of Louise Giovanelli, Vivian Greven, Will Kendrick, Oliver Laric and Guan Xiao plus a selection of historical works from Grundy Art Gallery’s Collection and The Lytham St. Annes Art Collection - punctuating the exhibition, these works provide historical reference points for some of the thematic and art form investigations underway.
In this multi-layered and multi-media exhibition, explorations of Greco-Roman mythology and the motifs of Rococo ornamentation sit alongside experiments in high and low technology, with 3D printing and Victorian illusionary techniques all on display. Examining the difference between ‘fast’ and ‘slow looking’, and the difference between looking and seeing, this exhibition also considers what we gain and lose in this era of the readily produced and reproduced image.
JOY : TINA DEMPSEY Extended to 27 April
Tina Dempsey’s exhibition continues Grundy Art Gallery’s programme of solo exhibitions by artists living and working across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. The exhibition is an examination of joy; exploring what it is, how it makes us feel and what triggers it. The exhibition seeks to stimulate and capture joy as a sensation, pausing it and allowing it to be examined closer. In her work, Tina Dempsey explores the social, physical, architectural and emotional resonance of the spaces we occupy; documenting and dissecting these experiences through drawing, painting, printmaking and collage.
EVENTS
A full programme of talks, workshops and events will also take place throughout the Spring Programme, these include:
Katie Paterson’s new participatory artwork, First There is a Mountain: Sunday 2 June on Central Beach, Blackpool (opposite Blackpool Tower) 15:00 - 17:00
Grundy Art Gallery is one of twenty-five high profile coastal art venues around the UK to be involved in Katie Paterson’s new participatory artwork, ‘First There is a Mountain’.
Members of the public are invited to join a mass sandcastle building event using buckets that take the form of five of the Earth’s mountains. Linking the world’s geography to the smallest grains of sand, ‘First There is a Mountain’ continues the artist’s interest in helping us to engage with forces that are too intangible and too immense for us to experience in other ways. Booking is required for this event, so please contact Grundy Art Gallery on 01253 478170 for further details.
