Review: The Verdict

If the Jury is out on whether to come watch this show, then let us present to you a winning case as to why The Verdict is a must see.

The story begins the moment you walk into the theatre. Introducing Frank Galvin, a struggling lawyer who has found a reliable friend in a drink or two, is bumbling around the stage dressing himself for the work day ahead after a night of drinking.

The opening is powerful and sets the scene. An overhead voice tells of a medical malpractice case against a hospital owned by the Catholic Church, where a young woman has been left in a coma after what should have been a straight forward birth. Mix in a struggling lawyer who needs the money to pay the bills and a distressed mother looking for a resolution, the question of what is right and what is easy comes into play.

The staging of the play is very impressive. Set during a cold winter in Boston, there is so much detail in each of the many sets used throughout. From hearing the bustling streets and traffic passing by outside Frank’s frosted office window to the local bar giving off a familiar vibe really adds to the impact of the story. The range sets used for each scene perfectly matches the tone and feeling of the actors and really capture the audience’s attention.

Credit must be given to the whole cast. Whether in a leading or supporting role, each cast member stands out and makes a memorable impact. The Verdict has a large touring production with 17 people acting out different roles, all fantastic and true to the character they play. Each actor shows true passion and emotion in the way they act and interact with one another; they are the ones who truly make the impact of this story so powerful.



Each act perfectly sets up the flow of the show. The introduction to the characters in the Act I who will play a vital role in the act to follow allows you to get a feel of their true nature. Having such distinct characters makes for a huge impact on the show and audience reactions alike; especially during Act II once the stage transforms and becomes home to the fast pasted twists and turns of a court room.
A story of an underdog – with the odds are stacked against Frank and co, will they be able to win this case and bring justice?
