So, last night we took a trip down the 'boulevard of broken dreams' and had the pleasure of going to see American Idiot at Blackpool Winter Gardens. We’d been eagerly awaiting this shows arrival at Blackpool as fans of Green Day, and we weren’t disappointed!
The show is based on the acclaimed 2010 album of the same name and as it’s a concept album with a story theme throuout the 9 track masterpiece, lends itself superbly to the musical format and follows three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9-11 world. Johnny (Tom Milner) and Tunny (Joshua Dowen) head for the bright lights of New York City whilst their other friend Will (Sam Pope) decides to stay at home with his pregnant girlfriend.
The story then plays out following each of the boy’s decisions: Tunny enlists in the army and gets seriously injured, Jonny falls in to a world of drugs and bad decisions and manifests an alter ego St Jimmy (Luke Friend), and falls in love with Whatshername (Sam Lavery) and Will falls in to depression with drinking and drugs to a point where is girlfriend and child leave him.
The whole cast put on an amazing performance with fantastic voices to hit songs like 21 Guns, American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Know Your Enemy and features songs written specifically for the show such as favourite son and too much too soon, Even the speaking parts referenced many past Green Day lyrics and songs.
It was great to have the live band tucked away in the corner of the stage the whole time on view, with members of the cast joining with them for certain songs.
When the show comes to an end and the cast have took their bows they all come back on stage with guitars to perform the classic Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) much to the delight of the audience!
So if your on ‘Holiday’ or not , American Idiot is Showing at the Blackpool Winter Gardens until Saturday 9th, don’t be an idiot and miss out on this!
