My First Ballet: Swan Lake

The English National Ballet production of Swan Lake at Blackpool Grand Theatre was simply enchanting and was a delightful introduction for my three year old little girl, who visited the theatre for the first time.
Being so young, I had obvious concerns that my daughter might get a little restless or lose interest during the performance – but she was utterly captivated throughout. A shortened and adapted version of Tchaikovsky’s classic; the performance was the right length of time for the children. The young narrator was joyous and engaging; explaining just enough of the story for her young audience (and some of us grown-ups) to follow. The wonderfully moving music, graceful choreography, exquisite set and costumes added to the magic – her little, wide-eyed face was a joy to see.
It was only afterwards that I found out the performers are students of the English National Ballet. While I’m far from being a connoisseur of ballet, the choreography and dancing was first class and very professional.
Of course I had to dress my own ‘prima ballerina’ in her own matching tutu, and she danced and twirled out of the theatre. And although she wanted to be like Odette and the other ‘pretty swan princesses’, she talked non-stop about ‘that naughty man, Rothbart’.
I’m thrilled my daughter enjoyed her first live performance and I can’t wait to book tickets for our next theatre visit.
