Grab your cycle helmet and join us along the promenade for one of the most exciting nights of the year; Ride the Lights!
On Tuesday 30th August, between 19:00 and 22:00, cyclists get to enjoy a preview of Blackpool Illuminations as the promenade closes to all cars. Riders will get a chance to see the world famous Illuminations, featuring stunning new displays and returning favourites including the new look Welcome Tunnel and a special tribute to the television show Star Trek, before the “Big Switch On” on Friday, the 2nd September.
The Ride the Lights cycle route runs from Starr Gate at South Shore to Red Bank Road in Bispham. Participants can choose to go in either direction and can start or finish their ride at any point along the route.
Create your own illuminations
Ride the Lights is open to people of all ages as a fun and free bike ride; you don’t even need a ticket! Many people choose to take part in fancy dress and others create their very own illuminations on their bikes using colourful fairy lights, lanterns and lamps.
Charities are welcome to use Ride the Lights as a fundraiser; it’s a great event to encourage supporters to participate and get sponsored for a chosen charity.
Safety
As there are expected to be almost 10,000 people at this exciting event, there are a few safety precautions to remember:
1) – Each bike is required to have at least one white light at the front and one red light at the back.
2) – We highly recommend that all riders wear a cycle helmet throughout the course of their ride.
3) – All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
4) – The tramway will continue to be operational throughout the ride, so please ensure you take special care around the North Pier/Metropole Hotel.
5) – First aiders and marshals will be on hand along the route if anyone runs into any trouble.
6) – Bike doctors and support vehicles will be on hand to sort out any breakdowns throughout the ride.
7) – The road is set to reopen to traffic at 10pm, please make sure you reach your destination by this time, and be extra aware of traffic.
Ride the Lights is a great opportunity to get the family together for an unforgettable night. Whether you choose to ride for charity or for fun, pop your helmet on and get ready to Ride the Lights!
