Blackpool Pleasure Beach has announced adrenaline fuelling plans for an £8m investment on its latest addition to the park, the UK’s first double launch rollercoaster, ICON.
The exhilarating revamp will make ICON the world’s first ever rollercoaster to be powered directly by the volume of riders’ screams.
Utilising state-of-the-art technology, special monitors will record the intensity of riders’ euphoric cries, sending pressure waves direct to the engine management system. The louder the scream, the greater the energy of the pressure wave and the faster ICON will travel. Early tests reveal that screams measuring 140db, the sound of a jet engine at 100ft, will see the ride reach a staggering 90km per hour.
The announcement comes less than a year to follow the launch of ICON, the parks latest ride, and the world’s most interactive rollercoaster. Since the launch, the Blackpool Pleasure Beach team have been passionate about developing the ICONic ride, year-on-year, and providing the most ground-breaking and adventurous experiences for thrill-seekers.
Speaking on the announcement, the Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Amanda Thompson OBE, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to announce such exciting plans for ICON. Once again, we will be pushing the boundaries of technology with a pioneering new design that will put the experience directly in the hands, or should I say voices, of our riders. Scream and you will quite literally go faster.”
“We’re incredibly proud to be the first to develop this remarkable technology with our partners Mack Rides, and cannot wait to start construction at the end of the year.”
The Scream If You Want To Go Faster project will be finalised and ready for ride fanatics by Spring 2020. For on-going information throughout the project journey, details on the development of the ride and expected launch date, please click here.
