The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company presents… The Gondoliers, HMS Pinafore & The Mikado

by Visit Blackpool
Performing three of the jewels in the G&S crown – The Gondoliers, HMS Pinafore and The Mikado – the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company will be joined on-stage by the National Festival Orchestra when they close their 2015 tour in the magnificent Grand Theatre, Blackpool.
Gilbert and Sullivan operas are undoubtedly for all the family, bringing fast-paced and farcical stories, and fun and feel-good songs, to the stage. Loved by adults and children alike, these three operas will bring joy and laughter to all who come and watch.
And to encourage greater access, the Grand Theatre is offering all those who love music and opera a saving of £12 when all three operas are booked together (details below). For young lovers of opera, The Grand will also be giving away the first 50 tickets for each performance at just £12.50 as part of an initiative to introduce more under 26 year olds to the theatre.
Marketing manager Andrew Howard said,
“We are so excited to be welcoming the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company to The Grand’s stage. They will surely put on an entertaining and rousing show in true G&S style! At The Grand, we are also about encouraging greater access to the arts, and there are a lot of students in and around Blackpool studying music, drama and theatre. Our Under 26 offer is targeted at helping them come and see a Gilbert and Sullivan opera performed first-hand. Those who have never seen one of these fun operas should not miss this opportunity.”
In the first of the three operas, meet The Gondoliers brothers Marco and Guiseppe who lead a happy life. However, following the arrival of the Spanish aristocracy, a royal dilemma is presented – they learn that one of them is the King of Barataria. As babies they were entrusted into the care of a drunken gondolier who mixed up the soon-to-be prince with his own son.
Aboard HMS Pinafore, the Captain’s daughter, Josephine, falls in love with a lower-class sailor, going against her father’s wishes that she marry the First Lord of the Admiralty. Ralph and Josephine decide to elope but the captain soon discovers their plan. However, a surprise revelation changes things dramatically!
The final opera in the triple bill sees Nanki-Poo, son of The Mikado, fleeing an arranged marriage. Disguised as a musician, he falls in love with Yum-Yum, who was betrothed to her guardian Ko-Ko. A year later, on learning that Ko-Ko was condemned to death for flirting, Nanki-Poo hurries back to claim Yum-Yum.
