VisitBlackpool discovers ‘Sensory Systems’ at The Grundy Art Gallery

‘Sensory Systems’ features the work of five leading international artists that brings an array of light based installations to the gallery, created from numerous mediums to demonstrate the great scope ‘light’ covers. Angela Bulloch, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Ann Veronica Janssens, Anthony McCall and Conrad Shawcross have taken over to produce one of the galleries greatest exhibitions to date. On entering The Grundy we were drawn to ‘Slow Arc Inside a Cube VI’ (2013) by Conrad Shawcross, a piece that fills the room with a continuous rotating pattern of light covering all four walls from floor to roof. The room lit with a stunning pattern by the impressive power of one single lightbulb. Next to be discovered was ‘Voice Array’ (2011) by Rafael Lozano Hemmer and is definitely our favourite piece!

Combing the use of different senses to look at light in an eye opening new way, this commission allows visitors to speak into a voice box and then watch their sound pulsate around the room to create a pattern of light. The exhibition is privileged to have the first public showcase of works by Angela Bulloch, which complements greatly the bright coloured work of Ann Veronica Janssens, both pieces not to miss! Stripping it bare and creating an interactive projection, Anthony McCall demonstrates how powerful a simple projection can be.

The Grundy Art Gallery is also displaying archive images from the Blackpool Illuminations dating back to the 1930s as part of LightPool. These historical designs truly show how todays grand display has grown over the years and yet has always been designed by the very best creatives.

Opening times for LightPool at The Grundy Art Gallery are Tuesday to Thursday 10am-5pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-7pm, Sunday 12-4pm with the gallery closed on Mondays. The last day of the exhibition is November 8 so don’t delay in visiting!
