Alfie, born in Blackpool and raised in nearby Fleetwood, gave the 20,000-capacity crowd a stunning rendition of his new release, Sing Sing Sing, before pulling the switch to trigger 66 nights of Illuminations. The Switch-On moment saw a burst of fireworks at the top of The Blackpool Tower, lighting up the sky above the Golden Mile. The two-time Brit Award winner now joins a roll of honour of Switch-On celebrities including the likes of Hollywood film director Tim Burton, Robbie Williams, Peter Kay and Dame Barbara Windsor. Alfie’s special guest appearance on the outdoor Tower Festival Headland stage followed another scintillating dance routine by Diversity and DVJ. The crowd was also treated to a spectacular four-hour concert featuring performances by Ella Eyre, Jonas Blue, Blackpool’s own Rae Morris, HRVY and Club MTV DJs R3Wire & Varski. The Switch-On show, supported by MTV, was hosted by Becca Dudley and also featured an hour-long showcase of Blackpool’s up-and-coming musical talent. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “This has been a thrilling night. We are delighted that Alfie, a star with international stature, has come back to his roots to switch on the Blackpool Illuminations. “It makes it such a special moment when the Switch-On star is someone who has a lifelong passion for the resort.” As a young boy growing up on the coast, Alfie dreamed of a career as a singer. He has spoken of his pride at being invited to turn on the Blackpool Illuminations. The Switch-On moment was watched by his wife, children and other members of his family. The weekend celebrations continue on Saturday 1 September when global pop icon Britney Spears will perform the last night of her UK “Piece Of Me” tour on the same stage.
