International Giants of Light and Sound Take To The Streets
24 October 2017
by Visit Blackpool
For the first time in the North of England, on Wednesday 25 October at 5pm, as part of the Festival@LightPool, specialist German, outdoor puppeteers, Dundu, will bring their gentle giants of light to life in Blackpool, accompanied by high-octane live music from renowned percussion ensemble, Worldbeaters in a premiere collaboration performance, Sense of Unity.
Sense of Unity combines visual spectacle, live music and snippets of audience interaction, to bring the community together for an evening of captivating, free outdoor theatre.
As night falls, the Worldbeaters will lead the procession from the Tower Festival Headland through the town in search of the puppets, performing high-energy beats on their unique LED-lit drums and setting the atmosphere for the performance.
Alex Rinsler, Director of the Festival said, “We're lucky to have Worldbeaters Music and puppet company Dundu bring Sense of Unity to Blackpool. The giant illuminated puppets will change the town, it's so memorable.”
Once discovered, the audience encounters the world of Dundu. The puppets’ transparent, flexible bodies, made up of a weave of individual fibre strands, will be lit from the inside, illuminating them against the darkening evening sky. Dundu will be handled and steered by a team of five skilled puppeteers who collectively breathe life into the figures as they interact with the audience. Dundu, either as baby or giant adult is a gentle soul, sharing love and light where he goes.
Audiences are invited to enjoy the different musical worlds: from the West African Kora of Dundu, to the world inspired drumming riffs and rhythms of Worldbeaters, whilst accompanying Dundu on their unique journey through Blackpool.
Fabian of Dundu and Chris and Alex of Worldbeaters said, “We are really happy to be working together and look forward to sharing the light and shaking it out loud with everyone in Blackpool.”
Both Dundu and the Worldbeaters have already separately captivated the imaginations and hearts of audiences across the world. This new work is produced by Activate Performing Arts, funded by Arts Council England through Coasters Touring Network and developed in Newbury Corn Exchange’s 101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space.
