Second Chance to Switch-On Blackpool Illuminations

by Visit Blackpool
Due to huge demand, you’ve now got a second chance to Switch On the world famous Blackpool Illuminations in this great competition brought to you by the Friends of Blackpool Illuminations, the Illuminations department and liveBlackpool.info.
Your second chance to shine on Thursday 7th November will make you the first person who’s turned the Lights on in November as Blackpool celebrates an extra week of Illuminations for the first time this year. All you have to do to be that lucky person to press the button is to register your details online.
Shirley Hunt from Friends of the Illuminations said “The Friends are hard at work, collecting and raising money to fund the Lights of the future, so this competition is a great way to say thank you to everyone who supports us by adding their coins to collecting boxes or throwing their loose change into the collection points on the promenade. All the money that is raised through these collections goes entirely to paying for new displays – it’s not used towards running costs or the Switch On event.
“It’s likely that there will be lots of people entering this competition who live on the Fylde Coast but it doesn’t matter whether you’re here on holiday or live just around the corner, it’s a great chance for someone to do something that normally they’d never get a chance to do.”
You can still enter for the first Switch On date on 23 October – when lighting up time is 6.30pm. On 7th November the clocks will have gone back so they come on at the earlier time of 5pm. Both Switch Ons take place at the Teddy Bears Picnic at the start of the Tableaux at Bispham. You’ll have your photo taken to mark the occasion and be presented with a unique certificate to take home with you.
Richard Ryan, Head of Blackpool Illuminations added “You’ll also get a chance to use the world famous Switch On switch, that this year was flicked by Jonathan Ross and has seen many famous people in the past, including racehorse Red Rum in 1977 and Kermit the Frog in 1979!”.
The Live Blackpool website is one of seven linked magazine websites about the Fylde Coast, designed to showcase everything that’s great about the place to people who are lucky enough to live here or just love it! Jane Littlewood, publisher of the site said “Like everyone, I love Blackpool Illuminations, and as Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen always says their special magic is that they make you feel like a kid again. For us it’s an honour to be able to run this competition and help with the Friends fundraising, because I never thought when I marvelled at them aged ten that I would much later be an Ambassador for the Friends, never mind live here where every normal day feels like the holidays when you were little.”
Anyone can enter this competition just as long as you can be at the appointed spot 15 minutes before Blackpool Illuminations are due to shine. The October Switch On closes on Sunday 20.10.13 and the November one closes the week after on 3.11.13. To enter simply go to www.liveBlackpool.info
