Grundy Art Gallery winter 2020 exhibitions

Grundy Art Gallery is delighted to announce its winter 2020 Exhibition and Events Programme.
The programme includes the ever popular, OPEN exhibition, our Annual Schools’ Exhibition, a solo exhibition by Blackpool-based artist Garth Gratrix and ‘Spotlight on Sculpture’; the first in a series of exhibitions highlighting Grundy Art Gallery’s collection. In March, Grundy Art Gallery will also present, ‘Conversations Series II – OTHER TRANSMISSIONS; a two week exhibition delivered in partnership with Venture Arts, the Whitworth, and Castlefield Gallery in Manchester and The New Langdale, Blackpool

OPEN 2020
Grundy Art Gallery’s OPEN 2020 once again throws a spotlight on creative talent across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. Participation in the exhibition is open to all residents aged 18 years and over from eligible postcodes and is unselected. With over 100 works on display and a wide range of media and techniques being demonstrated, this year’s OPEN looks set to be one of the most exciting yet.

GRUNDY ART GALLERY COLLECTION: SPOTLIGHT ON SCULPTURE
In 2021, Grundy Art Gallery will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the opening of its doors to people from Blackpool and beyond. In the run up to and throughout this anniversary, Grundy Art Gallery will be highlighting works from its collection in a series of ‘spotlight’ exhibitions. The first in this series, ‘Spotlight on Sculpture’, brings together recent as well as long-standing acquisitions in a display that highlights key sculpture works from the Grundy Art Gallery collection.

ILLUSTRATE.ANIMATE.ILLUMINATE – Annual Schools’ Exhibition.
Grundy Art Gallery is delighted to announce our 2020, annual schools’ exhibition. This year, the exhibition presents the work of pupils aged 7-10 years of age from six schools across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. In Autumn 2019, pupils visited the gallery to experience, Grundy Art Gallery’s light-themed exhibition, ‘A Trick of the Light’. During follow up workshops with artist Amber Akaunu, pupils have produced their own work inspired by what they experienced. This year’s participating schools are: Devonshire Primary Academy, Hawes Side Primary School, Highfurlong School, Kincraig Primary School, Stalmine Primary School and St. John Vianney’s Catholic Primary School.

Shy Girl, GARTH GRATRIX
Shy Girl, by Garth Gratrix continues Grundy Art Gallery’s programme of solo exhibitions by artists living and working across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. Of his work, Gratrix says he makes sculptural installations that embed Queer culture and its references within the process of making art in a given or used space. For Grundy Art Gallery, Gratrix will combine his core interests in minimalism, sculpture, installation and architecture, alongside experimenting with the language of colour, culminating in his first major solo exhibition in the North West. The exhibition is also accompanied by a series of performance collaborations supported by a National Lottery Project Grant from Arts Council England. Born in Blackpool, Gratrix is the founding director of Abingdon Studios Ltd in Blackpool and is the grandson of Roy Gratrix – legend player for Blackpool Football club (1953-1964).

Conversations Series II- OTHER TRANSMISSIONS
This exhibition brings together artists, with and without disability, from Blackpool and Manchester who have worked together to investigate how artists are labelled, who makes art and who it is for. The exhibition will also include works on loan from the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection, the UK’s largest collection of Outsider art which is housed at the Whitworth, Manchester. OTHER TRANSMISSIONS is presented by Grundy Art Gallery as part of its participation in Access Fylde Coast, a Coastal Communities funded project that is being led by Disability First, Blackpool. The exhibition, OTHER TRANSMISSIONS is delivered in partnership with Venture Arts, the Whitworth, and Castlefield Gallery in Manchester and The New Langdale in Blackpool.
