DV8 Physical Theatre Company Presents – John
17 February 2015
by Visit Blackpool
Internationally acclaimed DV8 Physical Theatre Company returns to Blackpool’s Grand Theatre this March for the first time since 1997, with two performances of the bold, daring and unique new production – JOHN.
No topic is off-limits in this innovative new show – from love and sex to drug abuse, crime and violence. JOHN is a compelling new work that fuses dramatic, real-life accounts with intense physical movement and technical feats to create a mesmerising theatrical experience.
Lloyd Newson, Artistic Director of DV8, interviewed more than 50 men in preparation for creating this brand-new show, asking them honest and open questions about love, sex and sexuality. One of those men was John. The disturbing yet beautifully told word-by-word account of John’s interview is recreated live on stage by Hannes Langolf who plays John. DV8’s use of innovative physical movements is combined with a fast-paced, ever-changing set to create an unsettling performance.
From a troubled upbringing to his endless quest for love and friendship, JOHN takes the audience through one man’s struggle to survive against a backdrop of difficult family relationships, alcohol and drug dependency, and deprivation. With moments of humour and humanity, John’s search for companionship converges with others in an unexpected place…
A Grand Theatre spokesperson said:
‘JOHN tells a compelling yet challenging story, which is difficult yet often heart-warming. The Grand strives to bring innovative shows of exceptionally high quality to Blackpool, and they don’t get much bigger than DV8 in the world of dance and physical theatre. We are looking forward to welcoming DV8 back to Blackpool Grand and hope many will take up the opportunity to see this extraordinary production.’
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see one of the most internationally renowned, diverse and daring physical theatre companies in the world – DV8 – present their latest work JOHN in Blackpool for two nights only on Thursday 12 to Friday 13 March.
In time for its new season of dance, Blackpool Grand also launches a brand-new Dance Pass, offering regular dance attenders a discount on seeing 2 or more dance shows this spring (from DV8, Ultima Vez and BalletBoyz). More information on JOHN and the Dance Pass are available at blackpoolgrand.co.uk.
In July the Arts Council England granted the continued support of the Grand Theatre, Blackpool for the next three years, to support and develop a programme of dance and physical theatre, increasing its National Portfolio Organisation funding by 37%.
The Arts Council’s National Portfolio Organisations, of which The Grand is one, represent some of the best arts practices in the world, and they play a vital role in helping Arts Council England meet their mission of providing access to great art and culture for everyone.
