LIVE at the Grand Theatre Blackpool, Tuesday 30 September to Saturday 4 October 2014
Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan’s critically acclaimed adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, 1984 will be playing at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre from 30 September.
George Orwell’s 1984, published in 1949, is one of the most influential novels in recent history, with its chilling depiction of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance and incessant public mind control. Its ideas have become our ideas, and Orwell’s fiction is often said to be our reality.
Filtering the spirit and the ambition of the novel through the lens of contemporary culture, this radical new staging explores surveillance culture, identity and how thinking you can fly might actually be the first step to flying.
The full cast is Tim Dutton (O’Brien), Steven Elder (Charrington), Andre Flynn (Martin), Janine Harouni (Julia), Ben Porter (Syme), George Potts (Parsons), Matthew Spencer (Winston) and Mandi Symonds (Mrs Parsons).
1984 was one of Headlong’s most acclaimed and commercially successful tours in recent history, having had its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse in September 2013. Nominated for an Olivier award in the Best New Play category, the play performed a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, before transferring to the West End’s Playhouse Theatre where it continued to receive critical acclaim whilst also being a commercial success with the West End run recouping after 10 weeks.
