Winter Gardens adds Hairspray to Roll Call of Honour 17 December 2021 by Visit Blackpool The smash hit musical Hairspray has been added to the Winter Garden’s Roll of Honour as the highest grossing Christmas show in the venue’s history. Stars from the show, John Thomson, Alex Bourne, Brenda Edwards and Katie Brace, celebrated the news as the inclusion was unveiled and its name added to the spectacular roll call of honour. Despite new guidelines that masks must once again be worn in theatres, ticket sales have continued to fly with 27,000 sold to date and over 30,000 expected before the end of the run on 2nd January 2022. Michael Williams, who congratulated the cast, said: “It has been an incredibly difficult two years for all those involved in theatre and as we once again face challenges it is heartening to see packed audiences enjoying this fabulous feel-good musical. “The message is to come and support theatres and be uplifted by a live performance this Christmas. The cast is incredible and the show’s songs are so celebratory it’s hard not to forget everything that’s going on around us at the moment for a couple of hours. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far.” The show, created by Paul Kerryson and Drew McOnie is now on its third hit UK tour with John Thomson (Cold Feet, The Fast Show) joining the cast as Wilbur Turnblad this Christmas for three weeks at Blackpool Winter Gardens (13 December – 2 January). John will be joining musician, actress and television presenter Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You, The X Factor, Loose Women and Songs of Praise) who has starred as Motormouth Maybelle since the tour opened in Jun 2021 as well as previous runs of the tour. West End leading man Alex Bourne (Annie, Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You) will continue in the role of Edna Turnblad. Katie Brace makes her professional stage debut as Tracy Turnblad in 1962 in Baltimore who makes it her mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.
