Fans of the classic tale by Eric Carle will not be disappointed in this true-to-the-book production of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
The show featured 75 vibrant puppets that captured Carle’s unique collage style throughout four stories. To begin with, we were treated to the delights of ‘Brown Bear’, ’10 Little Rubber Ducks’ and ‘The Very Lonely Firefly’ before the star of the show, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
A favourite of the short stories was ‘The Very Lonely Firefly’, told on a darkened stage with calm glowing lights. As the lonely firefly finally finds his friends, the audience was treated to a beautiful light display featuring an array of fireflies flying across the stage. This was followed by a huge splash of colour in the celebratory firework scene.
The highlight, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, saw children in the audience gasp in anticipation when the tiny egg on a green leaf appears under the light of the moon. With some very skilful puppet use, the timeless classic is brought to life in a mesmerising and enchanting sea of colour and fun, wrapped up in good old-fashioned story telling.
As the caterpillar eats more and more the children in the audience are in awe of his appetite and say the lines from the much-loved book along with the narrators. The birth of the butterfly at the end is spectacular to watch as he bursts on stage with grand kaleidoscopic wings.
There really is nothing to dislike about this hour-long joyful and beautifully presented stage adaptation. A must-see for those with small children and for the adults, this charming and warm story is a delight to watch.
