If you are looking for some fun yet more mature evening entertainment to enjoy whilst the kids are off school this week during half term, Octopus Soup! is the comedy for you.
The show is an old-fashioned style comedy where stereotypes are cleverly played upon by a talented cast. The staging is true to life, mirroring a retro dining room with a TV upon the wall and the table laid out for an upcoming meeting. Even the smaller details are relevant, the bookshelf which stores expensive books and vases and a film poster that makes for some entertaining jokes.
The play begins with the introduction of straight-laced insurance broker Seymour Norse (Nick Hancock), who is about to have a very important business call with the CEO of the insurance company.
Trousers pressed, presentation prepared and two belts worn just to be safe, what could go wrong?
Everything when not-so-agile burglar Marvin (Paul Bradley) enters the scene. What ensues for the rest of the first half is a mix of slapstick comedy and lots of laughs at well-timed comical jokes, especially when Seymour’s rather eccentric and dramatic wife Gloria (Carolyn Backhouse) enters the scene returning back from her latest audition and Terry, Martin’s pet octopus.
The result of Seymour’s and Martin’s meeting leads to an unplanned business meal with Virginia, the no-nonsense CEO (Gillian Bevan) and Alan, the head-honcho of the criminal world (Eric Richard). A tense evening meal, a starter of octopus soup and appearances begin to fall. Who will save the day when everything begins to unravel?
The show is full of witty references, fantastic facial expressions and amusing moments throughout that are sure to make you laugh. An intriguing title and an enjoyable comedy, Octopus Soup! is a new comedy that’s worth catching this week at The Grand Theatre.
Octopus Soup! will be running until Saturday 23 February at The Grand Theatre. Tickets are available here.
