On the 15
th October, a project and installation will be shown in The Derham Lounge at Blackpool Winter Gardens of all the images created to date. This is an opportunity for participants to chat with residents of Blackpool.
On the 11
th October a stop motion film will be created with all the Blackpool sites of the “in situ images” in collaboration with photographer and film maker Garry Cook. Film to follow.
The photography project has documented 30 performers through image and audio collecting “hidden” stories of Blackpool’s performance based heritage through memories, spaces and the backdrop of Blackpool’s residents. Documentary includes music, personal heritage archives and interviews. Participants are invited to be photographed in spaces they once performed in, such as The Circus Ring, The Winter Gardens Theatres and against aesthetic backdrops of Blackpool.
Over 12 months, a website has been populated with images of performers and stands as a long term document paying homage to performance individuals whose memories of place (Blackpool) have high esteem in their own past and allows audiences a glimpse into “backstage” life and personal story telling. Audios are co-created alongside sound artist: Rick Thompson from Other Worlds Festival.
Large scale photographs can now be found in high foot fall areas across Blackpool: Blackpool Central Library, Church Street FY Creatives, Blackpool Winter Gardens, Market Street/ ICW, North Pier Sun Lounge, Blackpool Tower and Brooks Collectables in South Shore engaging residents and visitors of Blackpool in a non-traditional and organic way away from a traditional white space gallery setting.
The project investigates cross generational storytelling and pays respect to Blackpool as a destination in performance and the people who made it so. Participant’s includes: Ice dancers, Circusettes, Blackpool Tower Orchestra Members, Dancers, Tower Ballet participants, Escape Artists and Musicians.
