The Bath Tub Bride at Tower Dungeons
20 September 2024
by Visit Blackpool
The Bath Tub Bride opens on September 27 – and will signify a poignant moment in both British and local history – together with a major crime break-through.
For the first time ever – audiences will be able to experience first-hand a piece of history and one of the most significant crimes ever committed in Blackpool and indeed the UK – in the heart of this famous seaside town.
The production will also mark the very first-time forensic science was used to bring a culprit to justice!
The spectacle is based on the true story of the Brides in the Bath Murders which saw serial killer George Joseph Smith hanged for the gruesome killing of three women.
His notorious crimes - one of which took place in Blackpool - shocked the nation back in 1915 and was one of the first to see police using forensics to catch a killer.
Smith, originally from London, spun a web of lies to bigamously ‘marry’ seven women, murdering three of them in separate incidents in their bathtubs and then collecting cash from life insurance policies or wills.
And it was thanks in part to a Blackpool landlady that he was brought to justice.
Margaret Crossley ran a boarding house in Regent Road and rented rooms to Smith and his new bride Alice. Within days Alice was dead.
The episode was ruled an accident but a year later Mrs Crossley read a newspaper story of another young wife’s death while bathing - and promptly contacted Blackpool police.
Now the grisly tale is being re-lived at Blackpool’s most frighteningly fun attraction.
Jamie Humphries from Blackpool Tower Dungeon said: “This is a really significant moment for The Blackpool Tower Dungeon and we are honoured to be remembering and paying tribute to such a significant break-through in criminal history with this latest production!
“At Blackpool Tower Dungeon we deliver brilliant storytelling with plenty of laughs and screams along the way. We’re especially excited to launch The Bath Tub Bride! And for people to be able to see a true historical crime which was committed in Blackpool – re-lived in Blackpool!”
The show runs from September 27 through to the end of October.
